The 4th Consultation workshop on Low Emission Development Strategy (LEDS) for Industrial Sector was held from 27-28 April 2016 at Orchid Hotel, Phuentsholing.
The Hon’ble Secretary of the National Environment Commission Secretariat chaired the opening of the workshop. More than 35 participants from the government agencies, private industries and UNDP country office attended the workshop.
The LEDS is being developed through the Low Emission Capacity Building (LECB) Project under the Global LECB Programme of the UNDP. The project is funded jointly by the European Commission, AusAID and German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
The objective of the workshop was to seek feedback and validation of information on the proposed low emission developmental pathways/opportunities for the industrial sector in Bhutan. These include feedbacks and validation of information on the proposed strategic interventions, implementation plans, and the institutional arrangements
The workshop was conducted in a very interactive manner and covered three proposed pathways:
1. Agro-based industries to shape industrial growth and improve rural economy
2. Improve energy efficiency of existing industries
3. Exploiting larger share of the value chain of the available minerals
After incorporating all the comments and feedbacks from the workshop, a revised draft of the LEDS was circulated to all the stakeholders on 10th May 2016 to seek additional comments and inputs. The final consultation workshop will be conducted in the first week of June 2016.
